Why I paint and what I love

I’m fascinated by the beauty and complexity of individual form, particularly within the natural world… but for me the real impetus for painting, my biggest source of inspiration if you like, is my experience of the deep essence or ’soul’ of each subject.

Most of my paintings relate to nature. My focus is wide and subject to change – an intense interest in skies ebbs, and suddenly water is calling me. Or earth; a myriad colours and textures changing through the seasons, unpredictable, mysterious and compelling. And beyond earth… for instance, a whole series of paintings was recently inspired by the gorgeous Hubble telescope pictures.

I love to paint and draw freely, letting images spill out from my unconscious. I do this by dropping deeper into my physical body, becoming more aware of subtleties of sensation and emotion, and thought. I don’t really know how to describe this process, except that it feels like tuning in to a deeper, more intuitive self, a self that knows how to let what ‘wants to be painted’ flow out onto canvas. I love to create in this way. It feels like home.
